Central Station
Central Station
Sydney, Australia
About the Project
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. Laing O’Rourke delivered the new Sydney Metro platforms under Central Station as well as the landmark Central Walk – a new underground pedestrian concourse to help customers get around Australia’s busiest railway station.
The upgrade better connects the station with suburban, intercity and regional travel services as well as transforming pedestrian thoroughfares for 270,000 passengers per day.
Design Goals
One of the project’s challenges with the ventilation structures was to be able to maintain the visual aesthetic of the platform, while ensuring efficient ventilation and providing excellent rain defense. Acoustic louvres were also needed to help prevent noise disturbance from the fluid plant room being echoed across the platforms.
To seamlessly meet all criteria, the designers sought a solution that met both functional challenges as well as resonate with the design essence of the station and ensure longevity in a high traffic environment.
Solution
Working alongside the designers, CS designed and supplied CS LSM triple stage louvres. As a Class A up to 4.6m ³/s volume flow rate storm resistant louvre, these repel up to 100% of wind-driven rain, providing an imperative level of protection for the plant room equipment.
CS also supplied A12350 Acoustic Louvres. This model is perfect for plant rooms that require both sound attenuation and ventilation. Additional single stage RS-3105 blades were also supplied, providing consistency in visual aesthetic, aligning with the appearance of the triple stage louvres. All louvres were powder coated in warranty grade Fluroset finish, improving longevity for the project in a high traffic area.
These solutions effectively met the project’s dual challenge of high-level performance and architectural integrity.
