Modern Methods of Construction and the drive for more efficient ways of building.

With the UK government pushing for platform-based construction solutions, we’re excited to have played a small part in the delivery of a new demonstrator building offering a glimpse of the future.

The Seismic demonstrator, located at BRE in Watford, is the culmination of a four-year project developed by a consortium comprising consultancy blacc, offsite manufacturers Elliott Group and McAvoy, Tata Steel, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), the National Composite Centre (NCC) and Specific (part of Swansea University).

Designed in line with the government’s Construction 2025 targets, the Seismic project exceeds them in every way, delivering a building that is:

  • 75% faster to complete,
  • 70% lower in carbon impact and
  • 47% better value than traditional construction.

The ambition is that Seismic provides a blueprint for the modular market to grow.

As part of the development of the Seismic Demonstrator building we were challenged by Tata Steel to develop a louvre system that would suit their Fast Fit, clip in façade cladding system, creating a flush finish with the adjacent cladding, and enabling natural and mechanical ventilation for the building.

We love the opportunity to collaborate with our customers and create something unique, particularly when that opportunity has the potential to change the built environment for the better. For this project, we took our popular, high performance, modular RSH-5700 louvre model and modified its frame to suit the Fast Fit system. This new solution enables façade contractors to quickly and easily install modular louvre panel systems into the curtain wall. Also, since the building is designed to be able to be dismantled and re-used the louvre systems can be removed easily with a simple tool and either re-used or recycled.
